Snoring is a social problem, often ridiculed and thought of as ‘a joke’. However, if you live with someone who snores, it is not a joke and can be very upsetting and damaging to relationships. If you know you are a bad snorer, you may feel embarrassed about it and may be asked to sleep somewhere else, away from your partner, who just simply wants a good night’s rest!

Wearing a snoring appliance can transform this situation. However, unless the appliance is comfortable and easy to wear, allows talking and the ability to drink water in the night, you will probably not wear it.

We are able to make high quality custom made snoring appliances, using a CADCAM design. They are comfortable and effective. These appliances are sometimes called MRDs (Mandibular Repositioning Devices) or MADs (Mandibular Advancement Devices). They work by supporting the lower jaw in a slightly forward position so that the back of the tongue can no longer fall back and vibrate against the soft palate, which is what happens when snoring.

Sleep Apnoea, or Apnea, is more common than many people realise. It means the person has temporarily stopped breathing during sleep. Some people wake up hearing themselves choking/gasping as they finally take a breath again. This obstructive problem is often called O.S.A. or Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and there are related conditions called OSAHS, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and Hypoponea Syndrome. Screening for the possibility of O.S.A. is essential prior to providing a snoring appliance, as many people are unaware they are suffering from this potentially serious condition. At Ringley Park Dental Practice we can offer overnight monitoring equipment using the Apnea Link device from Resmed. We are then able to use software data to download information to see if Sleep Apnoea may be implicated.
