Orthodontics Fixed Braces in Surrey

Many people are looking to have straighter teeth these days and want to consider dealing with unattractive or crooked teeth that have been worrying them for a long time. The good news is that Orthodontics, these days, is available for adults as well as for younger people and teenagers.

Smiling with a confident and straight smile is a reality with Fixed Orthodontic Braces.

Fixed Braces is just one of the methods of Orthodontics available. Other systems include the almost Invisible Invisalign System. Not every patient is suitable for Invisible Braces, so fixed braces provides an excellent alternative, although they are not able to be invisible.

What are Train Track Braces?

Many people use the expression ‘Train Tracks’ for Fixed Braces. This is because, in essence, this type of orthodontic treatment using brackets and wires presents a look of parallel wires, one on the upper and one on the lower teeth.

However, these days there are many different options for treatments with fixed braces. The system is very flexible and allows for treatment of just the upper teeth, just the lower teeth, both upper and lower, and sometimes just a small section of teeth in either the upper or lower jaw.

With this system of treatment, small square or triangular attachments are cemented to the teeth, known as brackets.

How do fixed braces work?

A series of wires is used to gradually influence the position of the teeth and achieve a rounded arch form and improved occlusion (how the teeth meet in contact). The wires used for most of the treatment are an amazing bi product of previous NASA research and each wire is able to retain its memory of its ideal shape. It uses this memory to guide the teeth to an ideal position.

How to look after braces

Keeping teeth very clean and having excellent oral hygiene is essential during orthodontic treatment with fixed wires. Most patients in fixed orthodontics are advised to see a hygienist regularly.

Do teeth move after braces?

Wearing retainers at the end of treatment is essential to maintain the final result . Teeth do have the tendency to want to relapse back towards their original position and the reason many people start a second course of orthodontics is because they were not conscientious about wearing retainers the first time round! There are different types of retainers that are available, and this will be discussed with you by the dentist.

Fixed braces are ideal for children or teenagers where there is a suggestion of non-compliance. The braces cannot be removed, although they can be abused!

SPORT WITH FIXED BRACE

It is important to wear a mouth guard when playing sport whether wearing fixed brackets or not. The dentist can arrange to have a correct mouth guard fitted over the top of the brackets.
